Meet the Newest Members of the Dune Bird Team: Our Runner Ducks!

Spring at Dune Bird always brings new life to the vineyard—but this year, it’s a little fluffier than usual.

We’re thrilled to introduce 14 Indian Runner ducklings to the family, three of which were lovingly hatched from eggs by our very own General Manager, Sarah Peschel. These quirky, upright little waddlers are more than just adorable—they’re a key part of our sustainable vineyard management plan.

Indian Runner ducks are a natural fit for eco-friendly agriculture. Unlike other waterfowl, they don’t fly and are incredibly active foragers, making them ideal for patrolling our 4-acre vineyard. Their favorite job? Snacking on pests like slugs, beetles, and other vineyard troublemakers—no pesticides required. They help keep our vines healthy and our soil balanced, all while entertaining us with their comical gait and busy energy.

Our duck team will soon be growing, with more additions planned in the near future. And under the guidance of GM Sarah Peschel—who’s not just their caretaker, but their trainer—these ducks will be taught to come when called and follow her to the vineyard to do their work each day. It’s regenerative farming with a splash of Dune Bird care.

This feathered crew is also an important part of our commitment to earning our SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certification. By using natural methods like integrated pest management—and yes, duck-powered pest control—we reduce our reliance on chemical inputs and support a more biodiverse, resilient vineyard ecosystem.
