Michigan Golf Explorer: Wine Up North
The Michigan Golf Explorer has a nice feature in their 2023 issue that recommends a stop at Dune Bird when you’re golfing at one of our many great golf courses! (of course it’s just fine if you don’t golf!):
Don’t miss a meandering drive to the northern reaches of Leelanau where some of the most inventive wine experiences are still developing. Near Northport, Leelanau’s “tip-of-the-pinky town”, industry newbies Nicole and Bo White have revived an old winery with a decidedly fresh perspective and a hands-on approach to building a place where community and hospitality are paramount.
Dune Bird Winery serves cool-climate wines for a variety of palates and has an enthusiastic staff that will help you find your favorite. With the intention of making everyone feel truly welcome, Dune Bird also offers a full coffee and espresso bar, creative non-alcoholic drinks, and a menu of hot tapas-style plates designed for sharing and savoring.
The rustic-modern tasting room and lawn surrounded by farmland feel especially homey and comfortable when loçal musicians per-form, which is often. Though it’s one of the newest wineries in Leelanau, it’s quickly becoming a beloved local hangout where tourists are just as welcome. If you’re here for the wine try AV8, a dry red blend named for the Whites’ love of flight, or sip on Pure Leland Bubbly, a sparkling pinot gris that sold out as fast as they could pour it last vear.
